School-wide language policy:
- The school has always emphasized the "biliteracy and trilingualism" approach to education. The school has invested a lot of resources to enhance students' language proficiency. English is taught in groups from S1 to S6, and Chinese and Mathematics are taught in groups from S1 to S3. The school-based curriculum is used to strengthen students' language foundation. The English Bridging Programme for S3 to S4 students meets the needs of students and helps them to adapt to the change in the medium of instruction as soon as possible.
- The school has four classes at each level from S1 to S3, with two classes at each level using English as the medium of instruction (MOI) and two classes using the mother tongue as the MOI. The school's overall performance in discipline and counseling is outstanding. Teachers are committed to teaching and caring for the students, and are actively involved in helping them to improve their academic performance and behavior. The school culture is simple and honest, and students are well educated, well-mannered and well-behaved. Students have a sense of belonging to the school and are willing to participate in school affairs and activities. Senior sisters and alumni serve as Big Sisters and Peer Counselors with serious attitudes and get along well with peers. Teachers, students, and parents are dedicated to community service and live up to the school motto, "We are the light of the world".
Learning and Teaching Strategies :
It was pointed out in the Education Bureau's Focused Inspection Report that the school implemented value education through both formal and non-formal curricula in order to cultivate students' good character and correct learning attitude. The school is also good at arranging different kinds of activities to encourage students to analyze and reflect from different perspectives, so as to build up a correct outlook on life and values. In the Focused Inspection Report, it was pointed out that the school had clear curriculum objectives and emphasized on the whole-person development of students. The EDB English Language Focused Inspection Report pointed out that the school had invested a lot of resources in this subject, especially in terms of manpower resources. The Principal has a vision and is particularly enthusiastic about the English Language Education Key Learning Area (ELKA) program.
The school has always emphasized on English teaching. The school sponsoring body employs additional English consultants and foreign English teachers, and there are English teaching groups at all levels.
In the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination, the school's five-year average pass rates for Chinese and English are about 98% and 94% respectively, which are higher than those of the whole of Hong Kong. 6 out of the 16 subjects this year have a 100% pass rate, 11 subjects have a 90% pass rate, and the percentage rates of Level 4 or above in a number of subjects are also higher than those of the whole of Hong Kong. The percentage of students enrolled in JUPAS degree programs is higher than that of the whole of Hong Kong, and the value-added of the four major subjects, the best five subjects and many elective subjects of the school over the years are all higher than the average level of the whole of Hong Kong.
The school offers a number of scholarships, including awards for students who excel in public examinations for university admission, study tours and exchange programs.
In addition to the split-class teaching, the school has further utilized the additional funding for Chinese, English, Mathematics, Liberal Studies and most of the elective subjects from S4 to S6 for group teaching, which has significantly increased the teacher-student ratio, thus increasing teacher-student interaction and feedback in class and after school to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning.
Teacher professional training and development:
The Education Bureau's Focused Inspection Report pointed out that the school emphasized the professional development of teachers. The school encourages peer lesson observation and arranges teacher visits to schools in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Mainland.
Whole School Participation Model Integrated Education:
The School adopts a whole-school approach in implementing IE. It has set up a Student Support Team comprising the Deputy Principal, the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and Support Teachers, social workers and educational psychologists to help students with special educational needs, and has arranged for teachers to enroll in IE courses to enhance their professional capacity. The school makes flexible use of the Learning Support Grant and other school resources, including the employment of Integrated Teaching Assistants (ITAs) to provide appropriate after-school support and socialization training for students, and the outsourcing of speech therapy to provide training for students in need. We also cater for students' learning differences through diversified teaching strategies to enhance students' learning effectiveness. The school also works closely with professionals such as the Education Bureau and school-based educational psychologists, conducts regular student assessments and meetings, and invites parents to participate in individual meetings, so as to help students design specific and feasible support plans through multi-disciplinary conversations. In addition, the school regularly disseminates information on SEN to all teachers. The school is committed to building an inclusive culture in the school, providing students with appropriate and diversified support services through home-school and resource deployment, with a view to enhancing students' learning effectiveness and facilitating their integration into the school.
Educational support for non-Chinese speaking students:
The School provides additional support to the admitted NCS students to help them learn Chinese: providing after-school Chinese learning support; employing additional teachers/teaching assistants to support NCS students' Chinese language learning; arranging intensive Chinese teaching modes (e.g., pull-out learning on a need basis, small group learning, etc.); developing school-based Chinese Language curriculum and/or adapting teaching materials; organizing cultural integration activities; and employing additional staff and/or purchasing additional translation/interpretation services to facilitate communication with parents. All classrooms and auditoriums are equipped with air-conditioning and IT equipment. 2019 will see a new performing arts hall. 2020 will see a new library, learning commons and 30 newly renovated classrooms. 2021 will see a new group activity room.
